Friends of Milnrow Clock Tower and Library Group launched

Date published: 06 October 2014

A Friends of Milnrow Clock Tower and Library Group has been launched with the aim of restoring the clock to full working order and help unlock access to the performance space and meeting room at the top of the library that currently has no disabled access.

Now at the centre of a conservation area, the once municipal buildings in Milnrow were built in 1888 and the library was added in 1907.

Access to the clock, described Irene Davidson, long time chairwoman of the Friends of Milnrow Park, as a “landmark and a link to our village past”, is now in private hands but the owner is open to a group working on getting it going again.

The room on the top floor of the library is the old council chamber and could easily become a performance space and additional meeting space. As it is council owned the absence of disabled access means it cannot be offered out for public use and the early plans for the Friends Group includes installing a lift.

Andy Kelly, who was instrumental in obtaining funding for the skate park, is also on board, with a plan to help raise money in small amounts.

Mr Kelly said: "The experience with the Friends of Milnrow Park is that a small group of people can make a real difference, and anyone interested can go to the next meeting at Butterworth Hall Community Centre at 7.30pm on Monday 13 October or contact me."
