Stuart Hampton sells a Hula Hoop for £712!

Date published: 30 October 2014

Artist Stuart Hampton, from Darnhill, Heywood, has sold what could be the world's longest Hula Hoop for £712.

Stuart found the Hula Hoop whilst eating the snack in bed and said: “My mind was blown when I discovered it. I thought it would be more fun to show the crisp to the world by putting it up for sale than it would be to eat it.”

Once listed on-line the Hula Hoop attracted bids from 32 people and gathered over 60 watchers.

Money from the sale will now be put towards Stuart’s life long dream of setting up a hippie commune where people can live together in what he describes as a “living work of art, a bit like the music video for ‘All You Need Is Love’ by The Beatles.”

Stuart, who has been commissioned to paint pictures and design album covers for many big names including Pete Townsend from The Who and Joy Division's Peter Hook, hopes that the commune can embody the spirit of peace and love from the sixties and seventies.

Stuart added: “As for the Hula Hoop, it caused quite a stir and is now probably the most famous Hula Hoop in the world, as well as being the most expensive.

“I think at this stage it’s safe to say that the crisp could now be considered a work of 'art' with a price tag of £712.”
