Remembrance Sunday in Rochdale

Date published: 09 November 2014

The Esplanade in Rochdale Town Centre was packed with people who wanted to pay their respects to those who died in the service of their country this morning (Sunday 9 November).

Young and old, gathered outside of the Town Hall for the annual remembrance service.

At 11am, the last post was sounded followed by a two minute silence.

After prayers and readings, wreaths were laid at the cenotaph by the Mayor of Rochdale Carol Wardle Rochdale, MP Simon Danczuk and Leader of the Council Richard Farnell.

Mayor Wardle said: “It was an absolutely brilliant service. There was a great turnout and we say ‘Lest We Forget’ and as long as people continue to come, then we won’t forget.”

Speaking after the service, Mr Danczuk said: “I am very pleased to be here this morning. This is a very important date in Rochdale’s calendar. There has been an impressive turnout today and I think it is important that we continue to remember those who have served for their country and lost their lives for this country.”

Andrew Pilkington-Steele, who attended the service with his family, said: “My dad was president of the Legion three times so we come every year. We have been coming for at least 10 years and we will continue to come.”

Patricia Sullivan said: “I used to come with my family when I was younger so it is something I still like to come to. I think it is very important that we continue with these services and that people come.”

Jackie Howarth added: “It was a lovely service. It was very well attended. I come every year but this year was extra special because my granddaughter was in the parade.”
