Ofsted Inspection 12 & 13 November

Following our inspection last week we are still awaiting the draft report to be received in school before it is subsequently distributed to parents with possible recommendations for improvements.

Health and Well Being Week

Many thanks for your support last week donating to the World Diabetes Day wear a`Onesie` Day at school. Mr Pidgeon wore his onesie all day, including meetings and school duties, and we managed to raise £600 which is a fantastic achievement! Many thanks indeed for your contributions to this charity.

Moving On Exhibition

There was an excellent turn out for the moving on exhibition held this week for students, parents and carers to get information on the available courses and programmes when students have completed school either at Year 11 or 14. Thank you for your input and support.
Anti Bullying Week
National anti bullying week has been held this week with the focus on `Let`s stop bullying for all’ and as part of our work in school students have been building a wall of anti bullying comments and statements in the reception area and the bistro. They make very good reading and with interesting messages.

Year 10 Parents Consultation Evening

A reminder that Parents evening takes place on Tuesday 25 November between 3.45 & 5.45 for Year 10. It will give parents / carers the opportunity to discuss the progress your son / daughter is making towards the accreditation targets and other vocational programme.

Young Leaders at 'Get Set to make a Change'

Well done to our Young Leaders who attended a glamorous, red carpet type event in Manchester and met Olympic and Paralympians as part of the `Get Set to make a Change' Legacy Leader programme. As ever Shane, Luke, Tom and Sheraz were great ambassadors for the school and thoroughly enjoyed the evening with Mr Butterworth and Mr Fallows. Well done to all concerned.

Departmental Offer: Autumn Term 2014

Each key stage has produced a document giving details of the various curriculum pathways for the autumn term. Should you wish to have a copy please contact school or for more details please visit the school website.

KS3

KS3 participated in ‘Wear a Onesie for the Day in support of World Diabetes Day. Pupils and staff wore some brilliant onesies however most of the staff complained of being too hot.

Pupils in the Lilac group are finding out about animals that live in the ocean and have enjoyed their “Under the Sea” experience.

Shane, Ethan and Michael attended an inclusive leaders conference at Failsworth were they had chance to create new games and learn new leadership skills.

In English Year 7 Red enjoyed their Party Time Topic by celebrating “Un” birthday by making birthday cards and playing pass the parcel.

After school cookery club made some lovely chicken and vegetable skewers; most enjoyable for tea time.

Chloe, Michael and Haroon had fun at the Chill Factore as a part of the health and well-being week. They had the chance to race down the lunge, rock climbing and participated in the ski session.

Classes have been doing lots of work on Anti Bullying and Mr Hall did the assembly on this. Kean has his lessons between the Lilac group and Year 8/9 Blue; this week in his PSHE lessons on Anti Bullying wrote his own poem completely independently:

“I think BULLIES are despicable.
They think they are better.
They think they are great.
They think it is ok to attack.
People they think they know
Wrong Mr & Mrs Bully.”

KS5

We celebrated the end of Health and Wellbeing week with a disco. Some of the staff and students dressed up in onsies to raise awareness of diabetes.
Good bye and Thank you to Carol who has been working at Redwood since it opened. She is moving to foreign parts (well, Wales!) We hope she will be happy and make the most of the seaside.

A group went to the National Media Museum in Bradford. We saw some old fashioned video games, some models of TV and film characters and we got to use the green screen which made it look like we were on Coronation Street.

Student of the week

Iram for using her initiative and handing in her homework

Most improved student

Ragnar for working more independently and taking a greater part in lessons
With Special mentions for Jordan N for taking part in lessons, interacting better with staff and students and also Komel for working really well, and for having the determination to complete tasks that were challenging—last weeks award winners.

KS4

During Tuesday Mornings Personal Progress lesson part of their accreditation is to make a journey on their own. We have chosen the independent journey to Oulder Hill Learning Resource centre. The group have been practicing the route and will make the independent journey to pass the unit in a couple of weeks.

Numerous staff across the Key stages are sporting some excellent moustaches to support and raise awareness of Men’s Health Issues.

Often it’s the funds raised by a charity that are most remembered, but at Movember the awareness raised through the power of the moustache is equally as important. The growth of a new moustache prompts a conversation, which in turn generates awareness and educates people on the health issues men face. Awareness and education then prompts people to take action and change behaviour, which is changing and saving lives today.

Students have been designing their own bricks to add to our anti-bullying wall .
Students in SSC have been practicing making sandwiches independently.
This week in Art SSC students have been examining different textures and producing collages. We have been very impressed at the amount of independence the students have shown.
