Budding young scientists from Beech House School reach the National Science and Engineering competition

Dawud Tahir, Talha Mazhar, Abu-Bakr Hussain, Owais Shakir and Umaan Farid, students from Beech House School in Rochdale, won a place in the finals of the National Science and Engineering competition having excelled in the heats with a project that saw them explore cleaning products.

Their project involved comparing different cleaning products and cloths to see which worked best on kitchen surfaces. The team will now represent the North West of the finals in Birmingham in March.

Their work will be seen by more than 60,000 visitors and students will come face-to-face with celebrity judges in a Dragons’ Den style pitch.

Umaan said: "The National Science and Engineering competition has taken me on an amazing journey and I’ve definitely got my sights set on the big prize next March.

"The best and most important discoveries and inventions are down to science and engineering and this contest has helped me realise that I want to be part of the future."

Imran Khan, Chief Executive of the British Science Association, which runs the completion, said: “We’re thrilled that the group from Beech House School have got through as finalists and wish them all the best for the national finals.

"This project really caught our imagination and we hope that it inspires other young people to enter the competition. We need to nurture a new generation of bright sparks and the competition offers a great incentive to get youngsters experimenting and having fun with science and engineering.”
