Unhappy CRIMBO for Kaylen Perry

Date published: 15 December 2014

A young male has become the first offender in Middleton to be given a so-called CRIMBO banning him from Middleton Town Centre.

Kaylen Perry was given the criminal behaviour order — also known as a CRIMBO — after he committed a burglary on Middleton Bus Station and assaulted a young male, leaving him badly bruised and suffering from concussion.

The new stronger order has replaced the criminal ASBO — which police say was not as useful in "managing criminality".

Perry is only the third offender in Greater Manchester to be given a CRIMBO.

The order, which is valid for three years, means police will be able to re-arrest Perry if he so much as steps foot in Middleton Town Centre, from which he is banned, and associates in a group of more than four; he is also subject to a 9-7 curfew for the first six months.

Det Sgt Diane Johnson said: “We were really pleased to get the first criminal behaviour order in Middleton, Rochdale.

"This new power will help us control the offending behaviour of criminals.

"Criminal ASBOs were not as useful as they could only be used if the same offence had been carried out a lot in a short period.

"The new criteria are a lot more strict but we can use these more regularly to manage criminality'.

"And if offenders breach the order, it will stay on their criminal records, which should be a strong deterrent."

CRIMBOs only came into effect four weeks ago.

Officers applied for the order when Perry appeared at Bury Magistrates Court on 13 November.

After pleading guilty to one count of Burglary and one count of assault Perry was given a 17 month Youth Rehabilitation Order with the CRIMBO attached.

Det Sgt Johnson added: "Perry has been a plague on the local community and caused a lot of anxiety and grief for decent people.

"We have taken a different approach with him.”
