Council to remove more bins from homes across the borough

Date published: 23 January 2015

Rochdale Council is set to remove more bins from residents after having already removed 5,112 bins from houses across the borough.

The second phase of an operation to target recycling rates is due to take place next week.

The first phase, throughout the months of October, November and December 2014, saw the Council embark on an extensive operation to remove 'unauthorised' waste bins from domestic properties.

Altogether, from 30 collection rounds:

• 5,112 bins were removed.
• 497 x 140L residual bins were replaced.
• 1,997 recycling bins/caddies (all sizes) were replaced as of 15 December.

It is understood that the operation was undertaken due to the fact that too much waste that could be recycled is being placed in general waste bins.

Councillor Jacqui Beswick, the Council Cabinet Member for Place and Regulation at Rochdale Borough Council said: “This is a great result and will help encourage residents to recycle more in the right bin. All the bins removed were no longer fit for purpose and were sent to be recycled into new bins.”

Speaking at a meeting of residents of Ashworth Valley in regards to fly tipping in early January, Councillor Beswick addressed the issue of bins and added: “One house had six general waste bins and another had 12. This is an issue that needs dealing with.”

Number of bins removed (per ward) in the initial pilot:

  • West Middleton - 941
  • Healey - 164
  • Kingsway - 860
  • North Middleton - 270
  • West Heywood - 471
  • Wardle and West Littleborough - 90
  • Smallbridge and Firgrove - 138
  • East Middleton - 134
  • Balderstone and Kirkholt - 550
  • Central Rochdale - 309
  • Hopwood Hall - 327
  • Milnrow and Newhey - 111
  • South Middleton - 77
  • North Heywood - 262
  • Castleton - 219
  • Milkstone and Deeplish - 189
