Lib Dem leader sends birthday best wishes to Sir Cyril

The leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg, has sent a personal letter to Sir Cyril Smith ahead of his 80th birthday next Saturday (28 June).

Sir Cyril is celebrating his birthday at the Town Hall at a special concert with friends old and new and a host of surprise celebraties.

In his letter to Sir Cyril, Nick Clegg said: "Many congratulations on your 80th Birthday.

"You have been a towering figure - not only in the political advancement of the Liberal Party, but also in the wider cause of liberalism.

"You were a beacon for our party in the 70s and 80s and continue to be an inspiration for the people of Rochdale and many others.

"I wish you and your family a wonderful day of celebration."

Tickets for the concert have sold out but all proceeds from the event are going to Sir Cyril's favourite charity, Rochdale Childer, and he is still hoping for more donations to come in. To make a donation contact Derek Wiggett:
