Wardle Academy’s Athletics Team success

Date published: 26 January 2015

On Tuesday the 20 January, Mrs Surtees took the Year 7 athletics team to the School Games Indoor Athletics competition. This is one of the toughest events in the sporting calendar!

After the field events, the girl’s team was in fourth position and the boys in third. This meant it was all or nothing in the relays.

The girls were consistent in their approach and were rewarded with bronze medals as a result.

The boys romped away, winning five out of six races and coming second in the other.

At the end of the competition the Wardle Academy boys’ team were joint first with St Cuthbert’s, who finished in first position in the field events.

As this was a school games event, the scores were recalculated the next day in accordance with the Greater Manchester School Games rules and we are pleased to announce that the boy’s team won the first place prize by 1 point!

This means that they will now be representing Rochdale on Wednesday 11 March in the Greater Manchester Schools Event at St Peter’s High School.

There were many outstanding performances, but we were successful because of the attitude of the team.

The PE department are very proud of everyone who took part, however Mrs Surtees’s voice still hasn’t recovered!

Thank you to Wardle Academy Sports Ambassadors who officiated on the night.

The teams were:
Boys: Ben Godsman, Tyler Kershaw, Matty Cooney, Harrison Mills, Sam Walker

Girls: Holly Murray, Ellie Bernard, Emma Blair, Ebony Gill, Minnie Barnes, Fern Lord
