Boy rescued from top of 30 foot embankment in Roch Valley

Date published: 01 February 2015

A 12-year-old boy had to be rescued after he got stuck during an afternoon adventure with a friend on Saturday (31 January).

The boys had scrambled to the top of a 30 foot embankment in Roch Valley when one of the boys realised he couldn't get down.

A crew from Heywood Fire Station was dispatched to help.

The control operator and firefighters initially had trouble finding him because he couldn't pinpoint his exact location.

Crew Manager Andy Waterhouse said: "He wasn't sure where he was, so I phoned him while we were enroute and asked him to describe what was around him and asked him if he could hear the sirens. That way we were able to trace the location.

"He was scared and thought he was going to fall off but we were able to reassure him we were on our way and would get him down safely."

Firefighters set up rope rescue equipment and were able to bring the boy down embankment to safety.

Crew Manager Waterhouse said: "Once we'd got him to safety, I gave him some advice and told him he must always remember where he is when he's out and about."
