Year 8 news

On Wednesday 11 March and Thursday 12 March year 8 attended the ‘Bloodhound Educational Experience’ event hosted by Stockport College.

Bloodhound is the name of a land car which has been constructed to travel very fast. In fact the Bloodhound team are hoping to set a new land speed record of the car travelling as fast as 1,000 miles per hour in 2015 and 2016.

A team of 70 designers and engineers, several universities and over 200 high tech engineering firms in the UK and 23 other countries around the world have been involved in the design and build of this extraordinary project.

During the trip, year 8 students learnt about the Science, Engineering, Maths and Technology involved in the engineering of bloodhound.

The day was divided into three workshops that lasted an hour. During the ‘Tour & Explore’ workshop, the students received a guided tour of the car and its components and a discussion addressing the design and science that goes into building a 1,000mph car. From this session it became apparent that the construction of the Bloodhound car involved a variety of disciplines of Science including: forces, aerodynamics, smart materials and communications technology.

One of the communications technology which was looked at in more detail during another session was telemetry; wireless data transfer. Examples of telemetry include: radio, ultrasonic and infrared system.

Students used dynaKars (cars which could transmit signals to the laptops) which were connected to a laptop remotely by Bluetooth to study the dynaKar’s speed and velocity using graphs. The students grasped the concepts very quickly, which was very pleasing as velocity time graphs is on the GCSE Physics syllabus.

The last of the three sessions was the session which the students found the most interesting; designing and making their own cars out of K’nex, which would travel as fast as possible.

During this session the students worked in small groups of fours and learnt about the different things which would affect the speed of their car such as its mass, shape and materials used.

The group which succeeded in building the fastest cars on both days were all girls’ group, which was fantastic as Science and Engineering are still perceived to be male dominated subjects.

On Thursday the group consisting of: Faith N’Doua, Demi Furlong, Emily Schwab and Victoria Sossou were also the overall winners for the day.

Year 7 news

Form attendance - 7.2 - all have been issued with vivos. Well done to Megan Clarke in Year 7 for her achievements with accelerated reading and getting through another million words. Certificates were issued to Megan Clarke, Oliwia Lis, Christy Joyce, Jakub Przysiwek, Faye Barnes and Nerea Richardson in assembly this week.

It is time to start returning the St Joseph's penny boxes in year 7.

Year 10 news
Year 10 boys participated in the rugby league festival at Matthew Moss beating Matthew Moss to reach the Rochdale Schools finals to be held at Spotland stadium as a current raiser to a Hornets game.

The RE Department have two revision guides available to all pupils. A £5 returnable deposit is required to receive both books. These are written by the chief examiner so are recommended reading pupils should see their RE teachers for copies.
