Best wishes and thanks from the Headteacher
As we come to the end of term we say farewell and a huge 'thanks' to three excellent members of staff who are leaving their posts to pursue different pathways!

Firstly Ann Eaton, teacher with responsibility for the Lilac Room in KS3 will be retiring following a career which has seen Ann work with and support many families and youngsters in special education. Ann has been a wonderful member of staff and we wish her well in her retirement.

Alex Darlington, The High Level Teaching Assistant in Post 16 department will be pursuing a career teaching in the post 19 adult education sector. I know Alex will have an equally successful career in her new venture following her impact in the 6th form here at Redwood. Alex is a very popular and extremely dedicated member of staff and we all send our best wishes for her future!

Michele White - Michele retires this week and she will be leaving a legacy of outstanding Post 16 provision in her role as Assistant Headteacher here at Redwood and also in previous establishments. She has dedicated her work to ensuring that the Post 16 students have the best possible opportunities to develop their life, workplace and employability skills. The most recent is the unique Internship Programme which has provided students with full time employment opportunities! Michele is also an excellent member of the senior leadership team and her undoubted skills will be missed as she travels the world!
Thank you to Michele, Anne and Alex for your dedication and support and it has been a pleasure to work alongside you! Best wishes with your different future pathways!

KS3

All staff and students in Key Stage 3 would like to wish Mrs Eaton a very happy retirement, we will all miss you.

Mrs Eaton says:
Just a quick note to say thank you for all the good wishes I have received from everyone. The decision to take early retirement was not easy and made more difficult by the prospect of not seeing the students daily. I will miss all the children but particularly those in the lilac room and I wish them the very best for the future whilst at Redwood and beyond.
I have worked at Redwood since it opened in 2007 and previously at Alderman Kay and have a wealth of memories, some sad but mainly happy, thank you everyone for these.

Enrichment group D made a healthy packed lunch; they tasted different fruits and made an egg sandwich.

8/9 Green went on the hunt for Easter eggs in their maths lesson; when they found the Easter eggs pupils had to answer a maths question from inside the eggs to win a cream egg. Everyone enjoyed this fun maths lesson.

Year 7 Blue and 7 Green successfully grew tomato plants from seed. They sold the plants for 50p each.

Pupils have been selling homemade Cheeky Monkey biscuits to top up the money they raised from last week; they hope to reach a final total of £100.

Thank you to everybody who assisted with the sponsored skipping event, the young leaders were a credit to the school and the event ran very well. Pupils in KS3 all took part in a 5 minute skip to raise money for The Young Leader’s uniform.

In their PSHE lesson Year 7 Red are learning about animal care. This week they learned how to look after a tortoise and gave him a bath!!!

Pupil Shane said “we went to the carvery with craft club for an Easter treat. I had ice-cream, 4 Yorkshire puddings with my potatoes, ham, chips and beans”!!!

KS4

Key stage four students have been very busy creating master pieces creative day!

KS5

Fran’s, Dave’s and Julie’s form groups went out to the Red Hot Buffett in Manchester. They went on the train from Rochdale and enjoyed looking around the shops before lunch. They had a lovely day eating lots of nice foods and spending time with our friends before heading back to school on the train.

Last year Fran’s tutor group took part in film making sessions with Danny Lomax from Glass Eye productions.
Their film was entered into the IntoFilm Awards and was shortlisted from hundreds of entries. Joshua, Kayliegh and Paul accompanied by Fran and Paul’s mum went to London to take part in the awards ceremony at the Empire in Leicester Square. We got to meet lots of celebrities including Naomie Harris from the Bond film Skyfall, 28 Days Later and Pirates of the Caribbean to name only a few.

Our film was awarded runner up, the Executive Director of IntoFilm said this about our film “Bold, truthful and hopeful. Interesting choice of music. Love how it captures the community spirit of people coming together for something positive.”

And the director of Sony Productions said

“A good portrait of a young man with terrific spirit. In the background of the main interview you see able-bodied kids playing sports and yet our hero isn't remotely fazed - he's achieved so much on his own terms and the film gives him a strong voice. I enjoyed the footage of the fund raising event he helped organize - the film-makers really know how to show a decent slice of fun.”

Everyone attended a party at Planet Hollywood, they served us lots of lovely food and drink. Joshua said it made him “feel like a celebrity being called Sir!” It was a very long day as we didn’t get home until midnight but we had an amazing time and it was worth every minute.
