Shock birth of Adalynn Ranesmai Madden in traffic jam

Date published: 14 April 2015

Craig Madden, from Heywood, helped deliver his baby in the back of his car, as his wife suddenly went into labour on Monday 16 February at the side of a traffic jam.

His wife, Kelly, called the midwife that morning after suffering discomfort.

To their surprise, and with no alternative option, they were forced to pull over as their baby girl, named Adalynn Ranesmai Madden arrived just 20 minutes later.

Craig said: “Kelly and Adalynn Ranesmai are both fine.

“I was taking my wife to hospital at about 8am and we were caught in traffic on Middleton Road. We were on the way to an assessment on the baby and my wife was on the phone to the midwife.

“Then we ended up pulling over because she was going into labour, which we didn’t expect. I didn’t panic, something else took over me.

“Around 15-20 minutes later, I helped deliver her. We were in a tunnel so it was a bit echoey and there were a few people watching from the bus stop.”

Craig and Kelly have four other children, who were born in hospital.
