Date published: 20 April 2015

A man was bitten on the face and had his leg broken during an assault in Rochdale.

The 42-year-old victim was with friends in St Chad's Gardens, next to Nelson Street and near to the Flying Horse pub on Saturday afternoon (18 April).

At about 4.30pm, an altercation broke out and he was rugby tackled down a steep grass embankment. He struck rocks and a park bench, breaking his leg in several places.

The offender then continued his assault by kicking him about his head and body and biting his face and arm.

The offender is described as a white, in his early 40s, of stocky build, with short dark shaven hair, stocky build with a possible name of Chris. He is suspected to frequent the Todmorden area.

As part of the investigation two men have been arrested and bailed pending further enquiries.

Detective Constable Russ Clarke, said: "This was a vicious and unprovoked attack in broad daylight which has left the victim in hospital with potentially life changing injuries.

"While we have arrested two men I believe the main offender remains at large and I want to catch him quickly and before he is able to harm other members of the public.

"The level of violence displayed by this offender is something I am particularly concerned about and if anybody knows his identity they should not approach him but instead contact the police immediately.

"The attack took place on a warm sunny day near to several local pubs and I am certain there are many other potential witnesses are yet to come forward.

"I would therefore ask that anybody who witnessed this or knows the identity of the offender does the right thing and contacts us."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 056 9961, or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
