Humanities Trip to Beth Shalom in Nottingham

Date published: 20 April 2015

On 25 March some year 8 learners from Matthew Moss High School went to the Beth Shalom, National Holocaust Centre and Museum in Nottingham.

The journey from school to the centre took about two hours; we were all very excited we were going to the centre because we feel very passionate about the subject.

In humanities we are learning about Genocide, which is the mass murder of a group of people for no real reason.

The Holocaust is the first type of Genocide we have looked into and we were taken on the trip to find out more information.

When we reached the centre the first thing we were introduced to was a presentation about the Holocaust.

After this all the students had a visit around the centre, the museum rooms and gardens.

We learnt many different things from the information and the many pictures on display. We found out more about how Hitler gained power and how he chose to rule in such a horrific way.

We saw detailed models of the concentration camps, and how three people often shared a bunk bed in the huts on the camp.

After the visit around the centre we had a short break, ate our packed lunch and we visited the book and gift shop.

When we had finished we met Rudi Oppenheimer, who is a real life survivor of the Holocaust.

We were so intrigued by him telling his story about his time during the war.

He was a young boy who survived mainly due to the luck of his little sister being born on British soil.

After he finished we also asked him some questions.

One of the learners said: “Meeting Rudi was once in a lifetime opportunity, I would never swap it for anything!”

At the end of the session we thanked the lady who introduced us to the centre and sat back on the bus to come back to school.
