Redwood School

Parent / Carer views

As you will be aware the views of parents and carers is a vital aspect of the forward planning for the school and this takes place in a variety of ways, for example EHSC Plans, Annual Reviews, parents evenings and via the Home School Book. We also ask you to complete an annual survey which helps us to focus on particular aspects of improvements required within school.

We are particular interested in your views following our disappointing inspection report in November and the subsequent measures we have put into place. We will be sending out a parental survey during the week June 15 and we would appreciate your input. We will also be conducting a variety of pupil surveys the week before on numerous issues relating to school.

Summer Clubs Programme

We have recently received confirmation that the funding cuts imposed on the local authority will have an impact on the funding we receive to provide the Redwood summer holiday club programme. We are involved in a series of discussions to ascertain whether we will be able to fund the programme which takes place for three weeks in July and August. As soon as I receive clarification I will inform parents and carers of the outcomes. Clearly it is something I wish to preserve as short break opportunities for families.

Student Council interviewing candidates

Our student council members were involved in a series of staff recruitment interviews this week and as ever did a fantastic job, posing some excellent questions to all the candidates. As usual great ambassadors for the school.

KS3

Kean Jones has been one of the pupils nominated for the Head Teacher award for being very mature about doing his tests; this is a big achievement for Kean…..WELL DONE..
Mrs Stott took her Enrichment group to Heaton Park, Jafran really enjoyed the swings.
Some of the Year 9 pupils have been very busy doing ‘My Plans’ over these last two weeks, they are very informative and pupils have behaved well.

Year 7 Blue visited Clithereo Castle. When they arrived back into school their classroom had been transformed and all pupils enjoyed a Medieval Banquet. Clitheroe Castle was gorgeous, all pupils and staff loved it; Harry remarked on how peaceful it was there, not like school. They all went up to the top of the Castle; it was so windy that Miss Gardner was scared her pupils would be blown off the top.

Some good progress and successes in the water: Jafran & Ali have begun to swim without support in the deep end of the swimming pool, while Jack is gaining confidence in the water and James independently makes his way around the pool.

Many students are making great progress overcoming their ears of the water, Kieran, Kean, Jack plus Natasha to name a few are getting in the pool every week and venturing deeper plus with greater confidence each week.

Year 7 Yellow have been caring for others and making friends:
Ali has been opening doors for people, Jack gave his toast to Jafran (who was very hungry). Jafran sat happily with Robert and interacted with him and James has been working hard and joined in well with the other pupils during their Enrichment session.

Year 7 blue went to Kingsway high school for Quad Athletics event, they did the 800m, 100m, long jump and javelin an the sun shone all afternoon. All pupils took part in the events and had a really good afternoon.

KS4

Miss Greenhalgh’s class have been weeding the sensory garden whilst the weather has been fine. Josh found some very large dandelions.

SSC visited the M.O.S.I., they had a really good time looking at all the exhibits.

A cricket coach has been into KS4 P.E lessons to teach some cricket skills, he has also run an after school club this half term. The students have learnt lot of new skills.

This week we had a great time in SSC Art making junk animals in the style of Natsumi Tomita.

The Bridging Year has started their Work Experience. Robert has been working at Suburb Cafe. He has enjoyed baking and general housekeeping at the café.

KS5

Abbey, Kelsey, Patrick, Nasima, Maithe and Jamie went to Old Trafford Lancashire and England cricket ground to take part in the table cricket tournament. After dinner they went to Media City and saw where they filmed Coronation Street. They played 4 games and met some new friends. They had lots of fun and showed team spirit by supporting each other.

Our topic in Music is The Instruments of the Orchestra and this week we have focused on tuned percussion instruments, such as the Xylophone. Groups 3 and 4 had fun playing along to the Harry Potter theme tune.

Student of the week

Brandon for coping really well with his transition visits to Holt Mill

Most improved Student

Jordan for consistently good attitude to his work and good recollection of his learning.
We had a set of new assistant editors this week. Sharma, Imran and Khadija from KS4 came and chose some of the pictures, wrote some text and added borders. We hope they enjoyed their visit to 6th form.
