Whitworth Community High School footballers in county final

Date published: 20 May 2015

Footballers from Whitworth Community High School won their Rossendale heat and will now be taking on teams from all over Lancashire.

In the final the Year 7 and 8 PAN team, pupils with additional needs, beat All Saints 8:1 in a match held at Fearns Community Sports College, Stacksteads.

Joint captains were Jack Leigh and Morgan Hayhurst.

Morgan, from Year 8, said: “I chose where everyone should play in the first half and we got five goals by half time.

“In the second half I switched from striker to goalkeeper to allow Joe Zielinski a chance to come out of the nets and he joined the defenders.”

A further three goals were scored by Whitworth in the second half and they conceded one.

Eddie Brown, Year 7, who along with Morgan scored two goals each, said:
“We are now through to the Lancashire finals which will be played in Blackpool in June.

“We will be playing 14 matches of five minutes each way because there are so many teams. We are really looking forward to it.”

Morgan attends an after school football club every Wednesday and Eddie trains before school.

They both used to play in their primary school football teams, Morgan at St John with St Michael and Eddie at St Bartholomew’s.

Eddie plays for Whitworth Valley Football Club and Morgan plays rugby outside school and used to be in Rochdale U13s team.
