St Cuthbert's 'Physicist of the Future' Award

Date published: 16 June 2015

St Cuthbert's Year 10 scientists were given the opportunity to present a five minute talk on an area of Physics which they had a keen interest in as part of the The Oldham & Rochdale Ogden Partnership ‘Physicist of the Future Award’.

Six pupils took up the challenge and researched/planned six talks on great variety; from how the invention of the light bulb changed our lives through quantum mechanics and the possibilities of time travel.

Each of the two classes chose their respective winner with both class winners going head to head with an audience comprising their classmates and staff judges; Mr Shields, Mr Riley, Mrs Chadwick, Miss Jackson, Miss Barlow and Mr Britton.

The pupils were given the opportunity to choose their winner with the judges deliberating over their choice as well.

In the end it was a unanimous decision that student, Mr R Dunn was chosen for the nomination of The Oldham & Rochdale Ogden Partnership ‘Physicist of the Future Award’ for St Cuthbert’s RC High School.

Mr Dunn’s talk on the possibilities of time travel was on an area beyond the scope of the GCSE course he is studying and yet Mr Dunn displayed a good depth of knowledge and understanding in this difficult topic.

He had obviously spent some time researching the topic and he presented his talk with great confidence.

Mr Shields commented: “His talk was original and thought provoking using a range of media to get his message across.”

All pupils deserve great praise for their efforts in their research and planning as well as having the confidence to stand in front of their peers to present their talk.
