Science

In science we have our very own butterfly farm. Over the past few weeks we have keeping up to date with our caterpillars. So far they have more than doubled in size and have started to produce the silk for the chrysalides.

Our year 7s have now become ‘butterfly keepers’ and have the very important task of taking care of them. We’ll keep up to date with their progress!

Chaplaincy News

St Cuthbert's team of Pupil Chaplains hosted a morning of sharing and reflection for Pupil Chaplains and GIFT team members from our Catholic partner primary schools.

This was the first event of its kind and pupils really enjoyed getting to know chaplains from other schools.

The day started with a lively game of People Bingo and was followed by a chance to swap ideas, celebrate what is going well and ask for advice about the challenges our chaplains face.

After a break and chance to talk with our Junior Chaplains, pupils then listened to the Parable of the Sower and reflected on how they can help the Word of God land on rich soil.
The morning ended with a short service of celebration in St Cuthbert's chapel when each school was invited to place a candle on the altar as we sang "Walk in the Light".

One of the primary school staff members commented how much the pupils had enjoyed the morning and how important it is for them to have witnessed older pupils at St Cuthbert's being so enthusiastic about their role as Pupil Chaplains.

Sports News

The Year 7 Rounders team played in their first tournament of the year and gave a great account of themselves. The girls have made great progress across the course of the summer and their growing confidence and ability was exhibited for all to see.

In the first game of the evening, they beat St Matthew's 10-2.5 with an excellent batting performance.

The second game proved more of a challenge with a 5-2 defeat to a very strong Newman college side.

The girls re grouped and went into the next game against St Monica's with a determination to field with greater consistency. This was certainly achieved as they managed to win the game 3.5-0. The final game of the evening was against local rivals Cardinal Langley and again a strong batting performance coupled with tight fielding saw them run out winners 9-2.5.

Their performance saw them pick up their first medals of the season finishing in 2nd place in the Greater Manchester Cup.

Duke of Edinburgh Award
Over the weekend 31 of our Year 10 students completed the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award Expedition.

This took place in White Coppice near Rivington and despite some torrential downpours on the Saturday all pupils were superb in their endeavours and successfully completed all tasks. Students navigated around an unfamiliar area, set up camp and cooked their own tea! Congratulations to all students involved.

Year 6 Friendship Morning

On Wednesday morning we welcomed 22 year 6 students from various different primary schools. All of whom will be joining us in September.

The students took part in a computer programming session, team building activities, an exciting science experiment and a food tasting session! All pupils thoroughly enjoyed themselves and feel much more at ease ready for their start in September. We look forward to seeing them all again very soon!
