Elderly couple have money stolen by bogus roofer

Date published: 26 June 2015

A group of men stole money from an elderly couple after one of them claimed to be roofer.

At 11am on Wednesday 24 June 2015 a man knocked on the door of a house on Stopford Avenue, Littleborough. He said he would fix the roof for a price and would attend the next day to carry out the work.

He arrived at 9.30am but said the work would cost more and asked the 86-year-old man and 85-year-old woman to come outside with him.

While they were outside, two other men went into the house and stole a large amount of money and post office cards with pin numbers.

All three then left.

One man is described as being in his 40s, of stocky build, 5ft 7in tall, very well dressed and spoke with a Scottish accent.

Another man is described as being in his 40s or 50s, of scruffy appearance, spoke with an Irish accent and had his front teeth missing.

Detective Constable Donna Rollinson said: “Both victims cannot believe they have been targeted in such a way and are deeply upset by what has happened.

“I would ask anyone who may have had three men fitting the descriptions given knocking on their doors and telling them work needs to be done, to phone us as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information should phone police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
