REAG clean Rochdale Canal

Date published: 30 June 2015

Members of the Rochdale Environmental Action Group (REAG) cleaned a part of the Rochdale Canal.

They cleaned the bank of the canal from the Milkstone Road to the Oldham Road bridge and found litter, rubbish, food and trolleys thrown both in the canal and on the bank.

Ghulam Rasul Shahzad OBE, Secretary, said:  "There were ducks swimming in the contaminated water and there is a serious risk to their and other birds' lives. The environment was stinking and it difficult for us to breath.

"Rochdale Canal is a great asset of Rochdale and we have collective responsibility to ensure the canal, roads and streets of the Borough are always kept clean.

“Not only does it affect the environment but also risks the lives of ducks and birds who drink water from the canal.”

He asked the River & Canal Trust to work with the Environment Service of the Rochdale Borough Council and the community to remove the rubbish, litter, and trolleys, etc from the canal.
