£35,000 donated to Springhill Hospice from Mayor’s Charity Appeal

Date published: 11 September 2015

Former Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Carol Wardle and her daughters Beverley Place, Lauren Sullivan and Gaynor Wardle-Brown have donated £35,000 to Springhill Hospice.

Following a mammoth fundraising year (2014-105), in which the Mayor’s Charity Appeal raised a staggering £45,000, the family presented the huge cheque to the Hospice this afternoon (Friday 11 September).

Speaking about the money, Councillor Wardle said: “We are very pleased that we raised so much. People were incredibly generous. We are absolutely over the moon with the amount that we have presented to the Hospice. They are talking about refurbishing four rooms and this is a charity that really does need the money.”

The money donated to the Hospice is thought to the largest amount given to them by a Mayor of Rochdale.

Chief Executive of Springhill Hospice, Julie Halliwell said: “This is an incredible amount of money to receive and the ladies worked extremely hard throughout their mayoral year to raise the funds. I am now glad to see that the hard work has paid off and see it come to fruition.

“We are going to have a look around and discuss what the money should be used for because I really want it to go to something that can be linked back to the ladies.”

During her time as Mayor, Councillor Wardle held a number of events, with the help of her daughters, to raise money for the Hospice, as well as Heywood Youth Link and Rochdale Children’s Moorland Home.
