Open Evening

Our Open Evening is Weds 23 September. We welcome all families to come and have a look around our facilities and chat to current staff and pupils. You do not need to be Catholic to request a place at St. Cuthbert’s. We welcome all who support our values and ethos of the school. We look forward to meeting you.

Art News

The new year 10 Art groups have got off to a flying start on their ‘Natural World’ project and under the instruction of Mr Julier they have already produced some very impressive and inspiring work. A special well done to Nikola Janowska whose work, shown in the attached photo, stands out as a particularly fine example. If this is a sign of things to come, then we can expect some spectacular artwork from these pupils/artists over the next two years.

Past Pupil Success Story

Mr Rogerson, a PE teacher from St Cuthbert’s had the pleasure of watching a League cup match at the KC Stadium between Rochdale and Hull City. Warming up for Rochdale was past student; Jonny Diba. Since then, Jonny has visited St Cuthbert’s with a gift of a signed shirt and observed the year 11 football team take part in a 'sky sports' line up which will be completed by next week.

Jonny spoke about how much he was enjoying life at Rochdale Football Club. We were thrilled to welcome him back to our school. Good luck for the future Jonny.

'You have only failed when you give up!'

As part of our commitment to continued professional development and improvement, our staff have been analysing the features of successful learning. This week staff training focused on the idea of metacognition and building resilience in learners. The analogy of 'snakes and ladders' was used. As teachers we are good at presenting ladders to help young people achieve but sometimes we need to design challenges or 'snakes' to build resilience and independence.

There is always the temptation in life to try to resolve problems for students as they arise - but real learning is about building capacity and resilience to get over the feeling of 'being stuck.' Staff will be challenging students to accept and celebrate when they are struggling with a concept and will focus on building the skills to overcome the hurdle.

We are asking parents to encourage their children to take responsibility for organising themselves, completing Home Work and taking active steps to overcome 'difficult' moments

Expressive Arts News

Music tuition lessons have started this week. Pupils need to check the timetable in the Music Block which will inform them of their lesson times. Pupils are studying a wide range of disciplines such as voice, guitar, piano, brass and woodwind.

Mrs Maloney has been visiting Music lessons to offer extra intervention on composition work. She said: "I am so impressed with the commitment of the pupils and the quality of the practical work they are producing. This is such a talented cohort who have clearly been inspired by Mr Turner. It will be fantastic to hear their finished compositions."

Watch out for Expressive Arts performances on Open Evening which is coming up on Wednesday 23 September. The ukulele band will be playing, Yr 11 Drama students will be performing their gothic plays and the cast of 'Jack and The Beanstalk' will be singing and dancing to the opening number 'Happy Town'. Tickets will be available to purchase on Open Evening.

Mrs Knox has organised a KS4 Drama trip to see 'The Crucible' at The Royal Exchange on Fri 18 September. This will be followed up by further study in school for controlled assessments.
Watch out for our new rewards: Expressive Arts 'Stars of the Week'.

Each teacher will nominate one pupil form KS3 and one from KS4 who has impressed them. Pupils can be rewarded for effort, extra curricular participation, a fantastic attitude or an excellent piece of work. Their name will feature in the weekly new bulletin, the newspaper and on the school newsfeed. Good luck everyone!
