Whitworth Community High School’s presentation evening

Date published: 25 November 2015

A founding teacher returned to his school on its 50th anniversary year to award prizes at Whitworth Community High School’s Presentation Evening.

Tom Hobson taught PE at the then Whitworth County High School when the school opened on January 6 1965 when just 315 students were enrolled.

Three generations of Tom’s family have been a part of the school; his wife Denise was bursar for 30 years and their children and grandchildren have been taught at the school.

He still teaches students how to play brass instruments.

Head Teacher Gill Middlemas said: “Presentation Evening is a time to recognise the outstanding work, the individual achievements, the talent and effort of our amazing young people.

“It is a time to show my appreciation to the staff and governors of our school for their commitment, enthusiasm, and desire to enhance the life chances of our students and to thank parents and carers for all the support they gave to their Y11 children and to our school over the past year.”

This year’s GCSE results were the best in the school’s history with 63 per cent of students achieving five or more A* to C grades including English and Maths.
Ayrton Bagshaw and Lewis Gooding both arrived at the presentation at the last minute because they had been taking their swimming teacher qualification on the same evening – another certificate to add to their tally.
