Elle Gregson-Howarth, Caroline and Alex Lord compete in Santa dash

Whitworth Community High School students and a member of staff went the extra mile to raise money for Rossendale Hospice, by completing a 5k Santa run.

Whitworth Community High School students Elle Gregson-Howarth and Alex Lord, along with Alex’s mum the school’s finance and exams officer Caroline took part in the Manchester United Foundation event from Manchester Cathedral and Old Trafford.

Elle, 14, said: “We have a team of 14 students taking part in the Youth Enterprise Challenge and we have been given £50 from Farrow and Farrow Estate Agency which we have to make grow.

“We have split into sub-groups and have already held cake sales, raffles and collected at the school concert.

“We also took part in the Santa Run. We donated to the Manchester United Foundation and then we all got individual sponsorship for the hospice.”

The 5k proved no problem for Elle as she likes running and Alex plays badminton, cycles and earlier this year completed a Run or Dye 5k race in Manchester.

Elle added: “Taking part in the Youth Enterprise Challenge has helped me to gain confidence because I am quite a quiet person, but I have had to talk to people in school that I didn’t know before.”
