"Mighty" Mehran Khan in the National Youth Boxing Quarter Finals

Date published: 10 February 2016

Hamer boxer "Mighty" Mehran Khan progressed to the National Youth Quarter Finals when beat Ben Jarvis of Redcar ABC in the 75kg to 81kg category in Stockton-on-Tees on Sunday 7 (February).

17-year old Khan entered the ring in the last contest of the afternoon and with his 6ft 7in frame towered above his opponent as they met in the ring for the referee's for final instructions.

On the sound of the first bell Khan immediately showed his intentions when he threw a long double jab, followed by a straight right hand which caught his opponent in his own corner.

Jarvis came looking to land his big left hand from his south-paw stance and when he did Khan used clever footwork to move out of range, then counter-punch his opponent with swift punches.

The Hamer boxer began to use his long, out-stretched jab to keep his opponent at bay while using the perimeter of the ring and allow Jarvis to push forward hoping to land his big punch but every time Jarvis tried, Khan countered with fast one-twos.

Khan came out for round two and immediately began to take the fight to his opponent with a fast four-punch combination before stepping back out of range, then returning with more punches.

Khan continued to keep his opponent at bay with his incredible long reach while taking the centre of the ring and all Jarvis could do was rush in with punches as he kept his head low.

On occasion Jarvis did manage to land a solid right hand hook which ruffled the Rochdale boxer a little but it wasn't enough to take the round.

Back on his stool before the third and last round Khan was told to pick up the pace and take the fight to his opponent by his coach Steven Connellan. He was told that he was in his opponent's back yard and if he wanted to win this contest then he would have to put more pressure on Jarvis and impose his will upon him.

Both boxers came out for the third and final round a little tired and as Jarvis continued to pursue his opponent, he hoped to land his solid left hand but the Hamer youth continued to keep the Redcar boxer at bay with his long jab.

The fihgt continued like this throughout the round and at the end it was Khan who had his hand raised in victory.

Hamer Coach Alan Bacon said: "We have got it to do now. The quarter finals, semi finals and finals are to be continued day-by-day next week starting on Friday 12 February in Rotherham so if Mehran is to progress then he will not have much time to recover, but it's a situation we are glad to be in because it shows how well this young man is progressing now that he is contesting his skills with the country's elite."
