Ahid Khan wins representing North West boxing team

Date published: 21 April 2016

Queensway ABC's Ahid Khan won his bout on Saturday (16 April) at the Rotunda Gym in Liverpool where he had been picked to represent the North West team versus Merseyside and Cheshire

Khan had drawn a boxer in Vaughan Gates from the Solly, which is known for producing very good talent. This was no exception as we was up against the number two in England from last year’s championships.

Round one saw both boxers finding their range with Khan having the most success and landing the better quality shots.

In round two Gates knew being behind he had to level things, however with Khan's slick movement he wasn't able to land the shots whilst getting countered.

Round three was very much one-sided with Khan moving in and out of range effortlessly. In the last 20 seconds Khan sensed he could stop Gates and picked up the pace only for the bell to go and save Vaughan.

The judges returned and delivered a split decision for Khan.

Coach David Hodkinson said: “To go in to this year’s championships having already beaten the number two gives us a great confidence boost. Ahid boxed punch perfect today and for one judge to go against us was a real shock, even for the Solly corner.”
