Hull Dockers 22 - 20 Rochdale Mayfield

Date published: 25 April 2016

A Mayfield side depleted by injuries and other commitments travelled to Hull on Saturday to face a Dockers side that have struggled so far this season, and it was complacency and a lack of commitment in defence, that saw the Rochdale side return home empty handed.

Mayfield gave penalty after error after penalty in the first half and Dockers capitalised with three tries for a 16 nil half time lead.

With coach Matt Callands' words ringing in their ears, Mayfield started the second half brighter, but conceded again within 10 minutes.

It seemed that, despite the efforts of Callum Marriott and Nick Hargreaves, Mayfield could not snap out of their trance until Declan Sheridan chased a kick from the base of a midfield scrum to collect and score.

Sam Butterworth converted that and the next try, scored when quick hands to the left saw Richard West make a half break, and his quick play the ball created space for Declan Sheridan to break the line and kick inside for Lewis Sheridan to score.

Mayfield were back in the game.

The lead was cut further when Declan Sheridan scooted over from acting half back, following good quick plays by Marriott and Whalley. Butterworth couldn't convert.

At 22-16 Mayfield had five minutes to salvage the day. They pressed hard and good hands to the right saw Marriott crash over wide out. Aidy Gleeson stepped up to convert from the sideline to try and level the score. The kick was straight and true, but struck the crossbar and bounced out to deny Mayfield two competition points that should have, in reality, been theirs.

Mayfield were short on commitment, from both those who played and some who didn't, but have the chance to hit straight back on Wednesday night as they face Bradford Dudley Hill in the Conference Trophy first round. The game will kick off at 7.30pm at Mayfield.
