Littleborough RUFC secure promotion

Date published: 10 May 2016

Littleborough RUFC sealed promotion from Lancashire North division with a convincing 35-3 victory over Egremont.

On a Saturday afternoon of glorious sunshine that saw Rakewood bask in the picturesque setting of its namesake valley, Boro made it an afternoon to remember scoring five tries in a dominant display in front of one of the biggest crowds of the season.

Chris Park went over for the first try of the afternoon and relieved some of the tension that had been building pre match. Winger Matthew Goldthorpe holding off two players before offloading to Park to scamper in for a try.

Littleborough for all their endeavour could not break a resolute Egremont side determined not to be there just to make up the numbers and they made the score line a close one going into the break, kicking a successful penalty opposite the left hand post.

Having gone into the break with a small lead that could be overtaken with a try, Littleborough, fired up by some strong half time words at half time, put in one of their best halves of play all season and Egremont could not cope.

First after some hard work by the forwards laid a platform for the backs, centre Adam Wayne like his namesake Bruce Wayne crashed through the midfield and took advantage of  space that had opened up in front of him to dot down for another try.

Wayne once more found quick ball and space to operate in off the forward pack worked the outside channel angle to perfection to find a gladful Whittles ready to take the final pass and gallop clear. Park found the middle of the posts with a simple conversion to put the game beyond the visitors.

That try allowed Littleborough to take off the shackles and really savour the moment they had worked hard for all season - cheered on by a delighted crowd.

Egremont had managed to keep try record breaker Goldthorpe from the try line most of the game but Goldthorpe demonstrated his value to Boro with the fourth try. Park caught the ball on the full before drawing the defender and releasing Goldthorpe to score his 31st try of the season.

Walton had time to add gloss to the scoreline and finish off the season in the very best way, scything through tackles before driving down central to the posts.

Park maintained his 100% record for the afternoon with the conversion, taking his personal tally for the game to 15.
