Leyland Warriors 30 - 26 Rochdale Mayfield A
Date published: 16 May 2016
Mayfield’s A team travelled to Leyland with just 15 men, but those 15 gave everything to the cause, and can count themselves unlucky not to come home with the points.
Leyland had the perfect start when their 13 burst the Mayfield line on the first set of the game to race 50 metres to score, but that stung Mayfield into action as they played controlled rugby to march upfield where Billy Percy proved unstoppable.
With belief restored, Mayfield scored tries through Lee Bradley, Richard West, Keiran Harmer and James Percy, as they worked hard for each other in attack and defence, to hold an eight point lead with just five minutes remaining.
With Mayfield defending as if their lives depended on it, the official found fault in all they did, gifting Leyland possession time and time again until they scored the points needed to pass a tiring Mayfield.
Mayfield were bowed but proud of their efforts in a great game in which, Dave Ellis, Keiran Harmer and Richard West were stand out performers. Dave Harmer and John Foy belied their years with their non-stop performances.
