Mayfield preview

Date published: 15 September 2016

It’s all or nothing on Saturday for the top teams in the Kingstone Press NCL premier division.

With third placed Leigh miners playing leaders Siddal and fourth placed Mayfield at sixth place Wigan St Pats and second placed West Hull at fifth place Wath Brow.

After last week’s comfortable victory against Wath Brow, Mayfield are still in the running for a top three finish, but they need to win their game and hope that Siddal do them a favour and beat Miners.

That will leave Mayfield needing to beat Miners themselves next week to snatch the third spot and a home draw in the play-offs.

If West Hull lost Both their games, an unlikely scenario to say the least, Mayfield could still finish second.

Matt Calland and Sam Butterworth must be pleased with the response of the youngsters they have drafted in this season and will be using them again.

Last week’s victory over Wath Brow was a typical example of how far the squad has progressed under their stewardship with players now starting to come through the youth section into the open age squad.

Players like Dec Sheridan, Zac Baker, Callum Ogden and Jack Rush, have become regulars this season while Matty Aston, with a man-of-the-match performance and two tries last week, showed he is another one to watch for the upcoming play-off schedule.

Wigan St Pats will be a tough game, Mayfield have already beaten them twice this season but there are no guarantees at this level and Calland and Butterworth know that.

The last few weeks have seen an unsettled side, a consequence of holidays injuries and other commitments but Saturday should see a largely unchanged team and that should be a bonus to Mayfield.

Dave Harmer's NWML side entertain Leigh Miners at the Mayfield Sports Centre with Harmer hoping that the lads show a bit more commitment than last week this could be a great side.

Dave Harmer said: “The lads are a bit hit and miss I hope they show up and do the business like I know they can.”
