Rugby League: Four Rochdale Mayfield players the toast of Lancashire

Date published: 06 December 2016

Four Rochdale Mayfield players were the toast of Lancashire as the Open Age side overturned a ten point deficit before the game to beat Yorkshire 32-6 and win the 2016 BARLA Tri-series County Championship.

Hooker Callum Ogden earned widespread praise for his performance around the ruck and was perhaps only bettered by forward Aidan Gleeson who added real punch and purpose to the pack and also showed up in well on attack. One memorable passage of play saw the prop chip the advancing defence, regather and beat the fullback before the chasers caught up. He also added one of only two goals kicked by the Red rose.

Team mates James Shaw (one try) and Setgreki Tala also had an impact as Lancashire increased their half-time 12-6 advantage.

Other tries came from Thatto Heath halfback Jack Jones (2), Wigan St Judes wing Darrion Ball (2), Blackbrook second row Scott Davidson and Leigh Miners halfback Jimmy Muir with Jones kicking one other goal.

Two Mayfield players also helped the Under 19s win their compeition. Zac Baker impressed last week at halfback and was in similarly good form as Yorkshire were defeated 40-14. He kicked six goals this time around while Lee Registe also played his part in the success, coming on as a replacement at half-time.

Jack McHugh (Orrell St James) scored two tries with others coming from Leigh Miners trio Tod Fenlon, Joe Digby and Will Ashworth, Leigh Easts Ryan Gray and Dante Morley Samuels of Wigan St Judes. The score was completed by three Yorkshire tries from Logan Pitts (2) and Joe Halloran, with Tom Forrest kicking one conversion.
