Wood Cup Round 1: Saturday 27 May

The cup holders Walsden were eliminated from this seasons competition in a high scoring game on their own ground.

Batting first, thanks to James Rawlinson’s 140 not out and 103 from Joe Gale they made a daunting total of 335 for 8 in their 50 overs. Royton however were in no mood to go down without a fight. After a rain interruption, they won on a revised run rate when scoring 278 for 8 due mainly to Ryan Carruthers in a remarkable innings of 154 in only 77 balls. His innings included eleven fours and thirteen sixes. Together with his brother Angus (46) they put on 165 for the second wicket.

Crompton at home to Saddleworth also won on revised run rate. After Saddleworth made 266 for 8 with Brian Lord holding the innings together with 93 and some solid middle order batting from 15 year old Sam Holt (42) another teenager Daniel Poole (46) and pro Imran Aslam (37) Needing to score 219 in 41 overs , Stephen Wright with 103 not out saw Crompton progress to the next round.

Another game where both sides topped the 220 mark took place at Glodwick when they entertained Littleborough. Batting first Glodwick put 224 on the board. Pro Rehan Rafiq 67 and Mark Whitehead 56 not out. When they had Littleborough at 187 for 8 they appeared to have the game won, but debutant 16 years old Joe Kershaw with a splendid 37 not out helped by another teen age debutant Lewis Eadsforth 2 not out couldn’t be separated in an unbroken ninth wicket stand of 38 to help Littleborough to victory.

Chris Williams with 132, Grant Jones 67 and George Walker 44 were the mainstays for Middleton when they scored 297 for 6 away to Moorside who replied with 207 for 9, pro Gerrie Snyman 50.

Milnrow posted 173 for 8 at home to Austerlands who with pro Shanuka Duraj making 53, chased down a revised target score of 146 from 42 overs to win by 6 wickets.

Greenfield took a liking to Heyside’s bowling and hit 317 with overseas player Armand Krugel scoring 88 and Alex Peters 63. When Heyside batted, they could only reply with 136 for 9.

Monton & Weaste accounted for Norden in another game decided by a revised run rate. Norden were all out for 159 after Josh Tolley had made 51 and Josh Lenihan took 4 for 27. Monton needed 152 in 34 overs and achieved this for the loss of 4 wickets.

There weren’t many bowling performances in this round of the cup, but the game at Shaw produced two. In a poor batting performance, Shaw had no answer to Rochdale’s Oliver Makin 5 for 14 and Mo Bux 4 for 21 as they were dismissed for 90. Rochdale had no problems in reaching 94 for 2.

Saddleworth and Crompton turned out to be the top game. John Punchard with 127 helped Crompton reach251 for 4. Saddleworth with a good effort from Ben Tunnicliffe 64 fell short on 222 all out.

Littleborough ‘s revised run rate of 105 from 33 overs proved no problem as they made 106 for 1, Chris Dearden 51 in reply to Glodwick’s 142 for 8. Middleton scored 222 for 9 before restricting Werneth to 91 for 8. Friarmere 118 all out beat Stayley by 37 runs who only managed 81 in reply, and Greenfield had a 5 wicket win over Heyside when they made 111 for 5 in reply to Heyside’s 109 for 9.

If the Shaw 1st XI had a bad day facing Rochdale, their 2nd Xi fared even worse with a woeful batting display.
