Moore Cup Semi Finals, Saturday 22 July 22

Glodwick 2nd v Middleton 2nd

Visitors Middleton won the toss and elected to field.

The Glodwick innings started brightly with Brad heap scoring the bulk of the runs until he was out on 27 with the score on 30.

Thereafter wickets fell regularly until with the score on 107 for 9 a last wicket father and son partnership between Richard and Nathan Connolly put on 32 runs.

The stand ended when Nathan was caught behind for 16 with Glodwick only using 38.2 overs for their 139 all out.

The pick of Middleton’s attack being Mohammad Sohail whose 9 overs cost only 13 runs in taking two wickets.

Middleton’s first wicket pair Matt Lee and Reece Jones put on 53 before Lee was caught behind the wicket for 28.

The remaining runs required were soon knocled off by Jones who made 25, Mohammad Shahid 37 and James Tierney 32 to reach 141 for 4 in 25.3 overs.

Heyside 2nd v Oldham 2nd

Heyside won the toss and put Oldham in to bat. A decision which they must have regretted as Oldham raced to 50 in only four overs with Junaid Khan being particularly severe on the bowling.

At this point Junaid was caught at slip and the introduction of Alfie Clarke into the attack checked the onslaught.

Gradually Heyside fought their way back into the game, with Clarke trapping Hyder Shah LBW and two more wickets quickly following.

With Mark Ingham bowling his 'floaters' the Oldham batsmen looked less confident against the slower pace, except for Mubashir Khan batting at No 8 with a hard hit 55 which helped Oldham reach 205 all out.

Mark Ingham with 3 for 15 and an Alfie Clarke being Heyside’s most successful bowlers.

When Heyside batted the start of their innings was disastrously in direct contrast to that of Oldham., losing their three most experienced batsmen to leave them reeling at 12 for 3. In the first over, Chris McDonnell was bowled for 0 offering no stroke, and then Mark Barnes was run out going for a needless second run. Worse followed when John Selby was LBW to Mubashir Khan.

At this point enter James Lord who despite the score batted confidently from the start. His partner Mark Ingham was caught at backward cover point for 11, which brought youngster Leo Matthews to the crease with Oldham scenting victory. Undaunted Lord took control of the innings, and played his shots all-round the wicket well supported by Matthews and the pair put on a century stand, before Matthews was caught and bowled by Basharat Khan for 22.

Lee Watkinson then joined Lord and the score crept up until with 30 required, six overs left and five wickets in hand, Heyside had turned the game round and now looked favourites to win.

Oldham brought Mubashir Khan back into the attack. A move which paid dividends when he caught and bowled Lord for a brilliant 94. Skipper Fiaz Khan then brought himself on to bowl and bowled Watkinson for 28.

Daniel Robertson was tied down by some accurate bowling before Fiaz bowled him for five and then accounted for Alfie Clarke for six. Luke Bentley for 0, to bring about another turn round in fortunes and leave Oldham the winners by six runs as Heyside were all out for 199.

Fiaz Khan with 4 for 39 and Mubashir Khan with 3 for 20 were the pick of Oldham’s attack. This combined with his 55 at a difficult stage of the Oldham innings earned Mubashir KKhan the Man of the Match award.

It is unfortunate in games like this there has to be a loser, but the game was a credit to both teams.
