Rugby League: Normanton 38 - 24 Mayfield

Date published: 03 September 2018

Mayfield lost this massive game in the first fifteen minutes, once again they allowed their opponents the upper hand in the opening minutes and paid the price for letting a very ordinary side play their own game.

On paper this was a strong Mayfield side and they must have felt confident of turning Normanton over, but it was not to be as they allowed the big Yorkshire pack to run down the middle, making yards seemingly at ease.

On the occasions when Mayfield did play rugby they were brilliant and streets ahead of the opposition, scoring five tries that were well constructed and well taken but it is not enough to produce moments, competing for eighty minutes is needed and they just did not do so.

Tries came from Paul Brearley, Liam Whalley (2), Rob Kershaw and Matt Calland.

Good performances came from Brearley, Cole Connolly and Sam Butterworth and Dec Sheridan collected the man-of-them-match award.

This was Mayfield's last chance of securing their status by their own hand. They are now left needing to win their final game against Underbank at home next week and hoping that either Normanton or Kells lose their games.
