Cricket: Heywood second eleven remain in promotion hunt with victory at Ashton Ladysmith

Date published: 04 September 2018

Heywood Cricket Club's second team stayed in contention for promotion from Division 4 East of the Greater Manchester Premier League with an 88-run victory at Ashton Ladysmith.

The victory sets up a showdown with Denton at Crimble on Saturday, when the winners will be poised to go up alongside champions elect Hollinwood.

Heywood were indebted to 55 from Roger Smethurst in their total of 142-9 at the Ashton ground, and he shared a crucial third-wicket partnership of 71 with Rob Bennett (26). Opener Jacob Kaye also weighed in with 19.

That proved too much for Ashton who were bundled out for 54.

Tom Pagett claimed three wickets for no runs in his two overs to polish off the tail; Chris Kaye also had a three-wicket haul: and there were two wickets apiece for James Mills and and Cav Hilton.

With just two games left in the season, Hollinwood have 98 points, Denton have 89 and Heywood are on 85.
