Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: Andrew Perez wins gold in first competition of 2022

Date published: 19 January 2022

Andrew Perez, 11, has landed his first gold medal of 2022 after taking part in his first tournament of the year on Sunday (16 January).

The Holy Family pupil won by submission in just 23 seconds in the under 34kg gi category at the All Stars Winter Edition South in Hemel Hempstead.

Grey belt Andrew, of Rochdale, will now be entered into a number of contests around the UK to prepare for the biggest children’s jiu-jitsu tournament in the world, the IBJJ Kids Pan American World Championships. The championship will be held in July 2022 in Florida and his parents will soon start raising money to help with the costs.

Andrew trains at Team Sukata in Warrington under coach Lee Simpson, a black belt.  As well as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Andrew and his younger brothers train in Judo at Bacup Judo Club and Judo Excellence Club in Hebden Bridge, wrestling at Bolton Wrestling Club and Thai boxing at Valley Thai Boxing Club in Whitworth.

He is sponsored by Valor Fightwear and RAINE Clothing Ltd.
