Rugby league: Mayfield preview

Date published: 12 August 2022

Mayfield face the three hour trek across country to face bottom club Egremont this weekend. Egremont suffered a record defeat last week at Lock Lane, conceding 98 points and Butterworth and Wood will be hoping they are still reeling from the hiding.

Mayfield now need to win one of their remaining three games to ensure survival in the top flight and this could be the perfect opportunity. The Cumbrians are always a better side on their home turf so the coaches are taking nothing for granted.

Preparation has been good for the trip and the boys are determined that this will be the game that they end their losing streak, five games now. There will be several enforced changes to the team with people once again away and working. Coach Sam Butterworth said: "Players are again missing but i know we have enough skill and experience in the squad to overcome this and come up trumps this weekend."

Andy Reid's NWML side at last have a fixture this weekend, as after a couple of cancellations they too are on the road. Their destination is a bit nearer as they travel to Warrington to face Crosfields. Reidy is raring to go with his table topping side and all being well they should overcome third placed Crosfields as they stride toward the play off final.

Fixtures Saturday 13 August 2022

  • NCL Premier Division: Egremont v Mayfield, kick off 2.30pm
  • NWML Division 3: Crosfields v Mayfield, kick off 2.30pm
