Connor Aspey joins Hornets on permanent deal

Date published: 28 October 2022

Connor Aspey has signed a permanent deal with Rochdale Hornets after spending last season at the club on loan from Salford Red Devils.

Hooker Aspey has chosen to sign a deal for 2023 following a successful first season.

He said: “After last year, I feel like I really settled in at the club and am looking forward to spending another season here.

“It was a pleasure to work with Gary last year and I’m glad to be playing for him again in 2023.”

The 20-year-old finished the season in fine form scoring four tries in as many games, as Gary Thornton’s side progressed through to the play-offs.

This included a brace in Rochdale’s record-breaking 102-4 win over West Wales Raiders.

As a result of this form shown, Thornton is thrilled to be working with Aspey again in 2023.

“Connor has joined us as a Hornets player following last season’s loan period from Salford, and I’m really pleased he has committed to us for another season. He’s another of our young talented players who showed up really well for us last year, and will be a big part of next season’s campaign.

“Connor is a very versatile player and covers many options for us. Although primarily a hooker, he is equally effective at loose forward or in the back row if needed, and his utility value will be much needed in the new-look squad. He is another tough defender and a strong ball carrier and, no matter which shirt he fills, he will always give his all.

“He has changed careers recently and may need to juggle things around to make every session and every game, but he is a great acquisition for us as we know what he can do, and he knows what is expected of him.”

Chairman Andy Mazey is equally excited to have Aspey back for 2023.

He said: “We are absolutely delighted to bring Connor Aspey to Rochdale Hornets on a permanent basis, having been on a loan agreement from Salford this year.

“His attitude has been first class often going above and beyond towards the back end of the season, in particular for Gary.

“He’s a good athlete who will give Gary some quality options in the middle of the park and it didn’t take long to sort out a contract with him as he, and his family, have really bought into the club and been a breath of fresh air on and off the pitch in 2022.”
