Isla-Rose Goodfellow, 10, has qualified for the karate world championships in Florida next year after winning two medals in the national karate championships in October.

Isla-Rose, of the Dojo Karate Centre in Rochdale, won a bronze medal for her weapons kata category and a gold medal for her fighting category.

The St Gabriel’s pupil joined the Dojo Karate Centre in May 2021, and was then chosen for the squad team just a few months later after training for three hours every week. Members of the squad are able to compete in squad and external competitions.

Isla-Rose competed in three squad contests, earning herself three gold medals and trophies, and two bronze medals. From there, she was able to compete in the world championships qualifier in Birmingham on 16 October.

Her mum, Nickala Fenton, said: “We are incredibly proud of Isla-Rose, and we look forward to going to Florida for her to compete.”

The world championships take place at Florida’s Daytona Beach in July 2023.
