Brown heads to Mallorca to round out rally season

Date published: 11 November 2022

Rochdale rally driver Steve Brown will make the long trip to Mallorca in Spain this weekend, as he aims to round out his competitive season with the Rally Dijous Bo 2022 [12-13 November] event on the island.

Brown, who has been unable to contest a full championship in 2022 due to work commitments, has enjoyed sporadic outings over the course of the year and more recently, has turned his attention to bigger challenges within the events that take place in Europe.

Driving his instantly recognisable Nissan Micra Kit Car and accompanied by Paul Stringer on the pacenotes, Brown will tackle the two-day event, which features ten special stages on the mountainous closed-public asphalt roads in the far north of the island.

“It will be great to go and try something different and round the year out with a new challenge,” he says.

“It’s not every day you get to rally in such a beautiful place as Mallorca so I`m really excited to get out there and see what we can do with the Micra. The main aim for us is to get to the finish so if we get a good result in the process then that’s a bonus, either way, it will be another experience ticked off the list.”

Brown’s outings in 2022 have been limited to just three so far, with the Wigan-based Questmead Stages marking his first back in February. In conditions battered by Storm Franklin, sadly the Micra aquaplaned off the Three Sisters circuit, sending the car into the barriers and instant retirement.

As part of a charity raffle prize for Jolly Josh, Brown would offer up the co-driver’s seat to a lucky winner at the Dave Read Stages at Anglesey, netting a class win in the process. His latest event came in October, contesting the 550 Challenge in Mallorca where he secured second in class on his debut on the island.

Now, returning to the tourist mecca, he will concentrate on a tough weekend of motorsport, which starts early on Saturday afternoon, before competing throughout the night and finishing just after three in the morning on Sunday.

With a host of experienced locals to go head-to-head with, Brown is realistic about his chances.

“Our outing last month will help a little but it's not going to be easy to beat the guys that have rallied here for years” he continues.

“If it's wet, and it's looking like it might be, the roads can be difficult and very slippery so we will need to be cautious. But the focus will be on enjoying it and I`m sure we will. If we emerge unscathed, we would like to do a little more in Spain and Mallorca next season too but let’s see how this goes.”

Steve is sponsored by Fuchs Lubricants, 710 Oils, PIAA, Questmead, Mintex, Brake Prep, CD Heritage and Magnum Motorsport.
