Whitworth High runner is best in north over 200m in the U13 category

Date published: 14 February 2023

Runner Lois Wormald is celebrating after being crowned the Northern Under 13s girls 200m champion at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

Lois, 12, attends Whitworth Community High School and trains three times a week. She is also in the top three fastest 200m runners in the UK for her age.

She said: “My grandma and grandad and my dad Jan and mum Leesa were there to support me.

“They had heats, then a semi-final and then the final. I won my heat and then won my semi-final.

“My friend Lois Melling also won her heat and got a personal best when she won her semi-final

“I just kept thinking about what my dad says to me about seeing myself on the podium winning. Then, in the final, I beat Lois and finished in 27.66 seconds to her 28.01. I went up to her immediately after the race and hugged her.

“My dream is to be in the Olympics.”

Lois started running when she was eight and joined Burnley Athletics Club, but she didn’t feel like she was being supported, and she had friends who attended Bury Athletics Club, so she switched.

Now she is looking into joining Sale and also has private lessons at The Etihad Stadium in Manchester.

Her next event is the UK Athletics Indoor Championships 2023 on 19 February in Glasgow at the Muller Indoor Grand Prix when competitors will attend from all over the UK.
