Hollingworth Lake Sailing Club

Date published: 24 February 2023

Visitors to Hollingworth Lake on Sunday 19 February would have seen 11 boats out racing. Usually the season starts on the first Sunday in March, however milder conditions have encouraged the club to try and hold an open event ahead of the normal time.

The north westerly wind gave excellent conditions for keen sailors to get out on the water again and a full lake was welcome. The first race was led by three Solos with David Winder taking the win, ahead of Nick Hornsby and visitor Innes Armstrong. These three would do well in the conditions.

The second race saw a different race winner. After a slow start in the first race, Richard and Heather Marsh, in the high performance RS400, got clear away to win, with second place taken by Adam McGovern, with young crew Jasper Bramwell, in a GP14. Third place went to Lauren Marsh in a Topper, who had beaten her parents in the first race.

In the final race, there were some stronger gusts. These were ideal conditions for the GP14 which won. Richard Marsh made a navigational error at an early mark which lost him the chance to lead. Second place went to Innes Armstrong, ahead of David Winder.

There was close racing all day and overall victory went to Adam McGovern and Jasper Bramwell in the GP14, David Winder (Solo) runner up, Innes Armstrong (Solo) third place and the junior winner was Lauren Marsh.
