New rugby league project aims to encourage more young children into the sport

A new rugby league project between Rochdale Mayfield and Rochdale Masters aims to encourage more young children into the sport.

Project ‘Building the Future’ aims to provide a fun engaging environment to introduce children from local primary schools to the sport, by providing high-quality coaching to schools.

Qualified coaches from Rochdale Mayfield ARLFC and Rochdale Masters will provide schools with a free six-week block of rugby league delivery for classes during and after curriculum time.

Sessions will be focused on fun and high energy, with children learning core rugby league skills whilst improving their fundamental movement skills. There will be an emphasis on teamwork and personal development and a clear pathway to socialise through sport whilst establishing a habit of regular physical activity.

Led by Mayfield’s newly appointed development officer Carl Abraham, the club has a mission to break barriers and to rebuild lost relationships within schools of the town.

A spokesperson said: “We are absolutely delighted with the number of schools that have already taken up the offer and the club would like to pay tribute to all for supporting and giving us the opportunity to provide students with hopefully an experience to remember.

“The uptake definitely proves Building the Future is here for the long-haul and we look forward to continuing our work within in the community by attracting even more schools to future programmes that we’re currently planning.”

Building the Future will commence when schools return after the Easter holidays.
