Brand new Under 7s team at Mayfield

Date published: 21 March 2023

A new under sevens team began their journey into the rugby league world down at Mayfield on a cold and muddy Sunday morning.

Due to last week's fixture being postponed, players turned up with nerves after lots of sleepless nights.

The nerves couldn’t be helped by the brand new management team of Kirsty, coach; Ste, the rugby union man and coach; Max, the 'football player', and then a bunch of parents, who were also nervous at the thought of their little ones rolling around in the mud, being wrestled until they surrendered.

Cadishead's team consisted of only six players, but more experienced; Mayfield had 11 players to be picked from.

Luckily finding a starting six wasn’t too hard as a few of the youngsters' nerves had them wanting just to watch at first and suss it out.

Kick off was upon us and the game was underway. The Mayfield players' nerves vanished faster than Usain Bolt on a 100m sprint, and although Cadishead got an early try, Mayfield came back with a few of their own.

Players all had plenty of playing time and even though some didn’t want to start, once they’d been on the pitch trying to get them off was even harder, with big tackles and plenty of tries for the youngsters.

The win went in Cadishead's favour, but the confidence this new Mayfield team left with, makes you think this could be one heck of an opening season.

A representative for Mayfield said: "Thanks to all the parent and spectators that made it. It was a superb turnout for the players. All at Mayfield appreciate your support."
