Ethan Moore, 14, holds 17 records in powerlifting - just months after taking up the sport

Date published: 29 May 2023

A 14-year-old boy from Rochdale currently holds 17 records for powerlifting after taking up the sport just 18 months ago.

Ethan Moore recently took part in the British Junior/Sub Junior Championships in Solihull, where he was the youngest competitor performing squats, bench presses and deadlifts.

Ethan successfully started the squat with 95k. He then squatted 105kg with his second lift to break the U16 British record by 5kg; he then attempted 110kg, but it was a touch too heavy.

Next was bench press and the U16 British record stood at 60kg. Ethan decided to attempt 65kg with his first lift and was successful: he then successfully pressed 67.5kg with his second attempt and raised the British record by 7.5kg.

The last round is the deadlift and Ethan opened with a comfortable 120kg.

For his second lift, Ethan attempted a 138kg deadlift, in a bid to break the 310kg British total record (the sum of the total weights for all three manoeuvres) by 0.5kg.

The Cardinal Langley student pulled it with ease, breaking the record so decided to attempt a very optimistic 150.5kg to try and break the deadlift record but it was slightly too heavy.

As the championships allow competitors to gain both North West and English records, Ethan now holds a total of 17 records at five levels:

  • 4 British records at U16
  • 5 English records at U16
  • 2 English records at U18
  • 5 North West records at U18
  • 1 North West U23 record

Ethan is now working on his deadlift to try and break the 150kg British record, and hopes to be selected to represent Great Britain in the European and World Championships.

He is trained by his grandad Ted Moore, a former two-time British champion and current champion of the North West records for 60-70-year-olds.
