Rugby league: Mayfield 56 - 6 York Acorn

Date published: 08 June 2023

Mayfield started this game as red-hot favourites, but it certainly didn't look that way for the first twenty minutes.

Two good sides slugged it out for supremacy and it was Mayfield who came out on top. York looked like a team who had come to compete and they certainly did that as they pressured the Mayfield line in attack and pinned back their hosts in defence.

Mayfield hardly got out of their own half for the first ten minutes. Luke Fowden, Cole Connolly and Dakota Tolhurst were working hard in defence, while Lewis Butterworth, Dave Mills and Joe Taira took drive after drive to soften up the York defence.

In Mayfield's first real attack of the afternoon, it was Taira who went at the line then threw a speculative ball out the back door. Sam Wright was in attendance and made the most of the pass as he opened Mayfield's account, Jordan Parr added the two, 6 - 0.

It looked like the Mayfield juggernaut was going into gear as first Parr, then Wayne English were unlucky as the last pass just failed them. York continued to play their game and were definitely looking like a decent outfit.

Unusually for Mayfield this season, their discipline began to slip a little and the lost possession and yards that entailed cost them dearly as York managed to get a converted try to level the scores with twenty minutes gone.

Mayfield worked hard as a team and built on the good defence, Dec Sheridan scored his first, converted by Parr to restore Mayfield's lead, 12 - 6. Then Dakota Tolhurst finished a flowing cross-field move and Parr again added the conversion, 18 - 6.

Mayfield were truly on top now and Travis Long took advantage of this as he created a try out of nothing after good drives from Nick Hargreaves and Mills, Parr converted, 24 - 6.

With five minutes to go until half-time, Acorn were visibly tiring, falling off tackles and leaving gaps. Devlin Long spotted this and used his guile to exploit the situation just before the break with a great score, Parr added the two, 30 - 6.

Mayfield started the second half strongly, just as the coaches asked, more of the same. Parr, Devlin Long and Sheridan were doing well in attack while Travis Long, Taira and Fowden were all over the park in defence.

Taira's work rate in particular was immense.

Callum Ogden was providing a good link between the forwards and backs and Mayfield looked good. As happens though at this level, one error and you are made to pay.

A penalty in the Mayfield half saw Acorn on the attack and their big number 11 caught the defence napping as he shot through to narrow the gap, 30 - 12.

That was the last time the Yorkshire outfit troubled the scorers though as Mayfield soon got to grips with the game again. Brilliant defence from Travis Long saw the ball dislodged and Lewis Butterworth pounced and jinked his way through the line, 34 - 12.

Acorn tried hard to get back in the game with some decent rugby and a determined defence but Mayfield were just too good. Connolly spent ten minutes in the bin followed by Fowden: both somewhat harsh decisions but you have to deal with that and Mayfield did. There was no let up in their intensity; they just kept going and the tries just kept coming.

Travis Long showed almost superhuman strength scoring his second, converted by Parr, 40 - 12 then Parr with some awesome support play bagged one, which he also converted, 46 - 12.

Soon after, Parr showed great vision as he broke from halfway and then put in the perfect kick for Kristian McVeigh to take his side's tally to the 50-point mark for the second time this season.

With the final whistle about to blow Mayfield were camped on the York line with all the forwards ready to take the ball in. Sheridan, from acting half, threw a dummy that Steve Prime would have been proud of in the eighties and strolled through for the final try, Parr scored the conversion to take him to the 20-point mark for the second consecutive week.

The man of the match, chosen by sponsors Ace Electrical and West Pennine Construction went to Joe Taira who was, in their words 'awesome'.

The Balcony Boys opted for young gun Isaac Reid.
