Sad death of Rochdale's 'Mr Sport'

Date published: 14 August 2009

A life member of Rochdale's amateur football league and former president of the midweek cricket league has died.

Cyril Fletcher passed away last weekend and his death will be a sad loss to Rochdale's sporting community.

He was club secretary for both Brickcroft FC and Rochdale Nomads for more than 30 years and in 2004 he received the FA's 50 years service to football award.

The Chairman of the Rochdale Online Alliance Football League paid tribute to Mr Fletcher. He said: "Cyril was a quiet and unassuming man. His dedication and commitment to Rochdale’s sporting community was second to none. I personally learned a lot from him and feel sure that knowing him made not only mine, but also the lives of others richer and he will be sadly missed.”

Mr Fletcher's funeral will take place on Monday 24 August at St Luke's Church in Heywood at 1pm, followed by interment at Heywood Cemetery.

Anyone wishing to send to send cards of condolence should address them to Mrs. L. Mather, 4 Fearndale Mews, Marsden Street, Bury, BL9 5BX.
