Rugby League World Cup in Rochdale

Date published: 19 November 2012

The Rugby League World Cup was in Rochdale this weekend during its tour of England, Wales and France.

The impressive silver-plated trophy was a popular attraction in the Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre on Saturday, with hundreds taking the chance to have their picture taken with the famous cup.

The cup also visited Clubmark Gold Clubs in the Town, enthusing youngsters from under eights through to the open age team at Rochdale.

Whilst many had come to see the sports ultimate prize, there were also some looks of amazement from shoppers as they spotted the celebrated trophy on show.

Mark Wynn Chairman of Rochdale Hornets said it got a great reception: “It was an honour to see this famous trophy come to Rochdale and we were literally swamped with people wanting their photos taken with it.”

To mark the occasion, 100 rugby balls were given away to shoppers by Wheatsheaf Centre Manager Martin Ballard.

Before leaving Rochdale the trophy took to the stage to kick off the Christmas Lights Switch On.
