Ince Rose Bridge 16 - 46 Mayfield

Date published: 23 April 2014

Another confident performance saw Mayfield run out comfortable winners in Wigan.

Wigan started well with a fine team try after just five minutes.

Mayfield hit back after great work from Niall Bradley and Liam Whalley saw John Foy jink his way through the defence for a Todd O’Brien converted try.

John Foy was again involved as he fed big prop Matty Moores who in turn slipped a well timed pass to Niall Bradley who scored to give his side the lead.

Ince are a young side, fit and strong and they pressured the Mayfield line for long spells, and only resolute defence from Mayfield kept them at bay. In particular, Joe Qanuici and Mark Biggins stood out, with Biggins making some superb tackles.

Mayfield were caught out after a try saving tackle from Komai left the winger isolated and his opposite number managed to squeeze in on the next play.

From the restart Ince lost the ball aand Joe Qanuici pounced on it and made 40 metres before Todd O’Brien slipped an inside pass to Matty Moores who powered his way through the line for a converted try.

Ince had put on a good show up to this point, playing some fast flowing rugby that belied their lowly league position but the powerful Mayfield pack kept on piling on the pressure and it became clear that Ince wouldn’t be able to hold on for much longer.

Three tries in the final 10 minutes of the first half confirmed this and the game was effectively won as Joe Qanuici, Jack Francis and Moores with his second added to the tally.

Half Time: Ince Rose Bridge 12 - 32 Mayfield

Not wanting to fold under the pressure Ince were a credit in the second half as they fought back with some tough tackling and equally strong running. Their approach was somewhat naïve at times but their tenacity admirable.

It took 20 minutes before the first points of the second half came when Komai benefitted from some excellent forward play and Matt Calland's determination to get on the score sheet making some powerful runs from centre and creating the position for Komai to get the scoreboard moving again.

With four forwards on the bench and the two wingers, Rob Kershaw and Komai, making run after run from the play the ball, the Mayfield pack were still going strong with twenty minutes remaining.

The half back pairing of Paul Brearley and John Foy capitalised on this creating chance after chance with Mayfield having no less than four tries disallowed for various reasons.

However, it wasn’t long before Brearley managed to open up the defence with his obligatory 'show and go' and then put Calland away for another great score.

Ince still refused to admit the game was gone and fought their way forward and managed a score out wide.

Mayfield had the final say as Kershaw scooted his way upfield before Brearley once more put Calland in for his second.

This completed the scoring and sealed another impressive victory for the Rochdale side; there were still some glaring defensive errors from Mayfield and some needless penalties that allowed the opposition to keep within touching distance for a long spell, but all-in-all this was an accomplished performance from Mayfield, who seem to work on the theory that if the opposition score 10 they will score twenty.

There were some outstanding performances with Joe Qanuici, Matty Moores, and Aidan Gleeson impressive in the forwards, while in the backs John Foy, Paul Brearley and Liam Whalley looked classy.

The Ince coach picked Seta Tala as the Man-of-the-Match; Tala looked dangerous every time he took the ball and never missed tackle. He was pushed close by Biggins, whose work rate was phenomenal, and new signings Jack Francis and Niall Bradley, two young forwards who look to have a bright future in the game.

Mayfield Team: Seta Tala, Rob Kershaw, Matt Calland , Liam Whalley, Komai Nualamatua, Paul Brearley, John Foy, Billy Percy, Todd O`Brien, Matty Moores, Callum Marriott, Joe Qanuici, Luke Sampson, Aidan Gleeson, Jack Francis, Niall Bradley, Mark Biggins.
